body to transform the myriad of experiences suppressed within it.
Contrary to traditional biological models, which suggest that memory resides solely in the brain, Jonathan Tripodi’s expanded paradigm, supported by leading-edge scientists and researchers, as well as by his own discoveries, presents the compelling case that “properties exist for information (in the form of energy) to be communicated and stored within and among every cell in the body”.
Each page relates true-life stories, history and science that illustrate how suppressed experiences lead to chronic physical, mental, and emotional imbalances that are often misdiagnosed and mistreated, which in turn, opens your mind and heart to the awareness of what your body has been telling you throughout life: “I remember.”
Freedom from Body Memory, then, brings to light the innate ability within you to identify and resolve your own body’s memories . In Jonathan’s words, “The body is not only capable of change and transformation; it was designed for it.”
Outlining a four-phase process, developed from personal and professional experiences, Jonathan clearly describes the path you must take to free yourself from the bondage, limitation, and
suffering of your body’s suppressed programming . Terms such as connective tissue, vibrational memory blueprints and Living Matrix leap off the page as Jonathan describes the human as a virtual symphony of energy, communicating with itself and with life around it.
In summary, Freedom from Body Memory represents a breakthrough in the traditional idea of human consciousness. It propels you out of your limited perceptions of self and body and confirms that you are infinitely more interesting, beautiful, and creative than circumstances, both past and present, suggest.
By the book’s conclusion, you will be inspired and confident enough to explore the transformation of your own body memory so that you can express more fully your vital, creative spirit and thus manifest healing and your innermost dreams and desires.
Part I: My Body Memory Experience:
Out of Body, pg. 67
When the pain subsided, I became still, lay on the floor and closed my eyes. My body continued releasing memory, but now it wasn’t physical or emotional; it was spiritual.
In my mind’s eye, I was viewing, from above, a little boy’s body splayed out in a gravel driveway. I freaked out when I realized that the boy was me and that I was out of my body. My spirit then turned to look up toward the sky. Two angels descended upon me. Smiling, they each took a hand and turned me back to face the scene below. As I watched my mother hovering over me to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the angels were taking me toward my broken body. Part II: The History and Science of Body Memory
The Founders of Body Memory, pg. 101
Albert Szent-Györgyi was a Hungarian physiologist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine in 1937. He is credited with discovering vitamin C. He made an equally important discovery in 1941: hydrated proteins are endowed with the ability to transmit energy. This ability is referred to in physics as semi-conduction.
Györgyi found that the body consists mostly of semi-conducting proteins that are interconnected to form an uninterrupted, whole-body network of tissue called connective tissue. So as Ida Rolf had suspected, connective tissue not only transmitted energy, but also somehow stored it.
Part II: The History and Science of Body Memory
The Living Matrix, pg. 116
As I previously mentioned, author and biophysicist James Oschman, in 2003, determined that since the nervous system and connective-tissue matrix are intimately combined, they form a larger, more advanced communication system; which he called the Living Matrix . The Living Matrix is an evolutionary description of human anatomy as one coherent body system that is alive and communicating with energy.
Oschman proposes that it is within this whole-body system that properties exist for information (in the form of energy) to be communicated and stored within and among every cell in the body.
The Freeze Response:
Where Body Memory Begins, pg. 128
As mentioned earlier, psychologist Peter Levine reveals that if you perceive that you are unable to confront or escape the situation, a secondary protective response called the freeze response is activated, which causes your body to suppress the negative impact of the experience. In essence, if you feel helpless to change a threatening, painful, or stressful experience, the freeze response will cause your body to bury any intense, negative sensations, thoughts and emotions that are arising, keeping them hidden from your conscious view.
Where, then, are these sensations, thoughts and emotions buried? The traditional view is that they are internalized in the mind or psyche. But, as you are now finding out, they are also buried deep within the tissues and fluids of the body. The body becomes tense and paralyzed, which is why the freeze response is also often described as the “deer in the headlights” effect.
Part IV: Treating Body Memory
The Body Memory Recall Approach, pg. 145
Today, Body Memory Recall (BMR ) is a therapeutic approach that incorporates over ninety years of insight and wisdom, and has helped thousands of individuals transform stress and challenging physical ailments into vital states of health.
BMR is founded on the building blocks of therapeutic modalities dating back to the early 1900s, which all shared a common philosophy: The body suppresses stressful experiences, not only in the mind but also in the body; in addition, the body is innately designed to release these suppressed experiences to achieve increasing states of growth, health, function and vitality .
The purpose behind BMR speaks to the phenomenon that, although release is a natural biological process, it rarely occurs without support or therapeutic intervention due to our unconscious habitual tendencies to suppress. Such release is both an art and a science that are at once realized through the BMR approach.
Part IV: Treating Body Memory
The Four Phases of Body Memory Transformation, pg. 159
After years of treating body memory , I began to see a consistent sequence in the transformational process, which I have detailed below. This basic outline can be used as a map by both healthcare practitioners and lay people to traverse the inward journey that resolves suppressed suffering and programming .
Part IV: Treating Body Memory:
Why Remember?, pg. 173
Body memory transformation is not just about remembering the past; more so, it’s about overcoming the fear of it. Fear is one of the primary sources of stress and tension leading to pain and disease. Therefore, as body memory accumulates, so does fear . Further, you can transcend fear only by opening suppressed memory and allowing whatever you are afraid of to pass through you physically, emotionally and energetically. Then you can encounter the fearless part of your nature, which I refer to as your true essence.
Appendix: My Top Ten BMR-Patient Experiences, pg. 193
Then, what occurred next blew my mind! Her legs began to push against my hands, which were still under and supporting her feet. I had learned during Myofascial Release training that a person’s legs or arms sometimes need to push or pull against resistance as a means of releasing suppressed body memory.
As trained, I provided equal but opposite resistance; as her legs pushed progressively harder, so did my hands.
Her head now turned abruptly left and then right, pausing for a moment on each side. Then, using the palms of her hands, she vigorously pushed down against the table.
This was a frail, deconditioned woman with a confirmed diagnosis of MS and demyelization of the nerves in both legs. Where was this strength coming from? Based on the medical tests and her two-year history of weakness and fatigue, this shouldn’t have been possible.
